SAGE Student Chapter

SAGE (Student Association of Geophysicists at ETH) is a student association for all students at ETH within the field of Geophysics. Organised initially by students in the Exploration and Environmental Geophysics (EEG) group, but activities are open to everyone at ETH interested in geophysics, ranging from Bachelor students to Professors, with a main focus on Master and PhD students. We are an official external pageSociety of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG ) Student Chapter and an official external pageEuropean Association of Geoscientists & Engineers (EAGE) Student Chapter.

Our main goals are to:

  • Promote the field of geophysics among students and keep them up-to-date of recent developments by seminars, excursions, workshops, etc.
  • Establish and maintain contacts with professionals in industry and at other research institutions.
  • Create a platform for students (at different stages of their studies and in different fields of geophysics) to meet and exchange ideas through social and educational events.
  • Support students that wish to attend SEG or EAGE events.

News

  • Nienke Brinkman has successfully completed the Chevron Student Leadership Symposium (SLS) at the SEG Annual Meeting (September 2019) in San Antonio, Texas.
  • Patrick Elison has successfully completed the Chevron Student Leadership Symposium (SLS) at the SEG Annual Meeting (October 2018) in Anaheim, California.
  • Henrik Thomsen received a travel grant to participate in the SEG Student Leadership Symposium (SLS) at the 2017 SEG Annual Meeting in Houston.
  • In 2019, we are planning to host the EAGE Student Lecture Tour and the SEG Honorary Lecture Tour again.
  • In March 2017, the Students of Applied Geophysics at ETH (SAGE) ranked first in the online Geo-quiz of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE). The price are three travel grants for the EAGE annual meeting in Paris, which they will use to send three students to this conference.
  • SEG's certificate for our chapter (click on the image below to enlarge).
  • Free copies of the latest issues of "The Leading Edge", "First Break" and "Geophysics" are available for reading in the magazine rack next to the sofa on H-floor in the NO building and for the Joint Master students in room F 11.

Past events

  • On 3 April 2019, the Student Association of Geophysicists at ETH (SAGE) hosted the SEG Honorary Lecturer Tour. This year, Dirk Gajewski (University of Hamburg) gave a talk on "Wavefront attributes - A tool for processing, imaging, and model building".
  • In April 2018, the Student Association of Geophysicists at ETH (SAGE) once again hosted the SEG Honorary Lecturer Tour. This year Ivan Vasconcelos (Utrecht University) gave a talk on "Full-wavefield focusing in seismic imaging – Concepts, applications, and examples".
  • In September 2017, we hosted the SEG Distinguished Instructor Short Course on Geophysical Electromagnetics: Fundamentals and Applications by Douglas Oldenburg.
  • In March 2017, Martin Landrø visited us to talk about  "New trends in marine seismic acquisition - possibilities and impact on data quality” as part of the SEG Honorary Lecturer Tour.
  • On 18 June 2016, we visited the Grimsel test site.
  • On 23 May 2016 at 14:00, we hosted the SEG Honorary Lecturer Michael Kemper with his lecture "Infusing rock physics into seismic inversion".
  • On 25 February, 2015 we hosted the EAGE Student Lecture Tour. Paolo Dell’Aversana (ENI E&P) was giving a talk on Integrated Geophysical Models.
  • On the 28 January 2015 Ralf Ferber was visiting us again and gave a seminar on non-uniform sampling.
  • In November 2014 (26.11.2014), we hosted a workshop: "The art of being a scientist" by Professor Roel Snieder (Colorado School of Mines) for graduate students and young researchers wishing to perfect the practical skills needed for a successful research career.
  • On the 7 October 2014 Ralf Ferber (Geophysical Advisor at Schlumberger) gave a presentation about Deghosting Wavelet Processing.
  • On the 27 June 2014 we organised the first SAGE Geo Pub Quiz during the Friday Beer. Thanks to Noël Ammann (organiser of the famous bQm Pub Quizzess) it was a great success and we got very positive feedback that encourages us to repeat the event in the future…
  • In March 2014 we have successfully participated in the EAGE Online Geo-Quiz and won three EAGE Student travel grants for the EAGE conference in June 2014. Krisztina Kelevitz, Yike Mo and Pakorn Tangtuengtin benefitted from these travel grants and represented our student chapter in Amsterdam.
  • On the 30 April 2014 we hosted the SEG Honorary Lecture given by Laurent Sirgue (Total) on "Full waveform inversion of seismic data: Investigating the Earth for high-resolution velocities and more…".
  • On the 9 April 2014 a large and diverse group of students attended the EAGE student lecture tour. Sylvie Grimaud (Total) gave a lecture on 'How to Manage Fractured Reservoir Modeling' (EAGE Student Lecture Tour 2013/2014).
  • On the 10 January 2014 we visited the famous particle physics laboratory CERN in Geneva (see image below).
  • 7 June 2013: Talk by Professor Andrew Curtis from the University of Edinburgh on: "The Benefit of Hindsight in Observational Science" (DownloadPoster (PDF, 475 KB) and DownloadAbstract (PDF, 33 KB)).
